New Mills Parish Boundary Walk

This walk follows the New Mills Walkers are Welcome Parish Boundary leaflet.
The full walk of about 18 miles is challenging, and includes long ascents and descents, a variety of stiles, mud and some very wet conditions. If you are planning to come, please wear stout footwear and remember that spare clothing is a good idea. There will be stops along the way where you can buy food and drink, or you can bring your own food and water bottle and top up along the way.
You can do all or part of the walk, by leaving or joining at one of the stages near a bus stop. There is also an option to drive up to Rowarth and join the boundary walk for about 4 miles starting at and returning to the Little Mill.
There will be walk leaders for the whole event and each of the stages. There is a full description of the walk in New Mills Walkers are Welcome’s leaflet number 5, New Mills Parish Boundary. Printed copies are available at New Mills Heritage and Information Centre.
This is a free event and is open to all, but we are asking participants to register for the walk and indicate if you are planning to do the whole walk or, if you plan to join at one of the stages, which one; to register, please download and complete this form and email it to us at email@example.com, or telephone 07767 829449.
Stage 1: New Mills to Birch Vale – 5½ miles
Leave New Mills Heritage and Information Centre at 9:00 am. Arrive at Grouse/Sett Valley Café at approx 11:45.
This stage follows the boundary up to the canal and then down to Gowhole, and then climbs up Shedyard Clough to Laneside, and from there over the moor and down to Birch Vale. This stage has steady climbs and descents, rather wet paths and lots of stiles. There will be a 20-minute rest break at the Sett Valley Café.
Stage 2: Birch Vale to Monks Road – 4 miles
Leave the Sett Valley Café at approximately 12:10 pm and arrive at Plainsteads Farm/Monks Road at approximately 2:30 pm.
This stage again has steady climbs, and the opportunity for a 20-minute rest break at The Little Mill.
To join the walk at Birch Vale, you can catch the 358 (11:13 am) or 61 (11:30 am) bus from New Mills and meet Dave or Rose at the Sett Valley Café.
Stage 3: Monks Road to Brook Bottom – 5 miles
Leave Plainsteads Farm at 2:30 pm. Arrive at The Fox at approximately 5:25 pm.
This stage has some climbs and descents, but not as many as the earlier two stages. Dave plans to leave the walk at Monks Road and walk back to the main road to catch the 61 bus back towards New Mills. To join the walk at this stage, catch the 61 bus (1:30 pm from New Mills) towards Glossop, get off at the top of Monks Road and walk about 1 mile up to Plainsteads: approx. 20 minutes.
Stage 4: Brook Bottom to New Mills – 3½ miles
Leave the Fox approx 5:45 pm. Arrive New Mills Heritage and Information Centre approx 6:50 pm.
This stage returns to New Mills via Strines and Mousley Bottom. The nearest bus stop to this stage is the 358 in Strines. Alternatively the Fox is about 1.5 miles from New Mills along Brook Bottom Road. After a steep descent to Strines Road, this stage is mainly flat.
Little Mill Loop: Rowarth – 4 miles
Start time approx 1:30 pm
We are also planning a 4-mile loop that follows the boundary starting and ending at the Little Mill. There is plenty of parking in Rowarth, at the Little Mill and in the village. Please let us know if you would like to do this part of the walk, which will take about 2½ hours, including a rest stop.
9:00 am – leave Heritage Centre, New Mills
11:45 am – Grouse/Sett Valley Café, Birch Vale
1:30 pm – Little Mill, Rowarth
4:00 pm – Children's Inn nr Rowarth
5:25 pm – Fox, Brook Bottom
6:50 pm – Heritage Centre, New Mills
Service 61 towards Glossop
Leaves New Mills at 30 minutes past each hour, and Hayfield at 41 minutes past each hour. Arrives at Monks Road approximately 49 minutes past each hour. It takes about 20 minutes to walk along to Plainsteads Farm from the bus stop.
